Things that apply to life and my profession

There are somethings that I stumble upon that are good in several aspects of my life… anyone’s life. Most of the time I make a note to myself to “come back to” or “to remember”. (these eventually end up in a stack and the stack ends up in the trash as a part of some effort to clean) Today, though, this cross-reference of moral stability will be made known to those who care to partake.

The School Counselor’s Moral/Ethical Decision Making Process for the Everyday Person:

#1 – Values, the short version, are moral guidelines, interlocking systems of meaning and of significance that provide us with the foundation of our choices. In the profession of a School Counselor, in following with the ACA code of ethics and the ASCA ethical standards for School Counselors.. basically our source of counseling values (and for this special excerpt) the values that most practicing Christian strives for in our everyday decisions, whether aware or un are:

1. non-malefience (do not harm)

2. beneficence (promote good)

3. autonomy (promote self-determination)

4. justice (be fair)

5.fidelity (be faithful – keep promises)

6. context and system awareness (know the culture and background of those with whom you are in contact with)

#2 – Once you are ready to act, you need to strengthen your willpower, know that the taking of this and any action you have chosen may not be easy. Not everyone will agree with your decision. Maintain your focus on your higher purpose, maintain the pride in yourself, and have patience and be persistent with your goal. Sometimes the best we can do is resolve to make a better choice in future situations.

I promise that all of this ranting came from my School Counseling in the Educational System textbook… but am I the only one who hears the potential of a sermon and/or can either quote and/or recognize the context of scripture in the above statements. Christ died for us AND left us an example of how to be moral and ethical human beings. Double blessed are we.
